Health Benefits Of Kalonji Oil

One of the most important Ayurvedic herbs, Kalonji oil, has been used in Indian medicine for thousands of years. It is important to treating a number of medical conditions, including use as an antiseptic, weight control, blood glucose maintenance and reducing blood pressure.

Kalonji oil is a nutritional powerhouse, containing many medicinal components, micronutrients and minerals. The health benefits are enormous, and due to its superfood status, and medicinal use, it can be used for treatment of a variety of conditions.

Hair Loss

Hair growth can be improved by applying kalonji oil to the scalp after shampooing. Allow the hair to dry then apply, use once per day for a period of around 10 – 14 days. You should see some improvements in this time, when necessary repeat the treatment process.

Migraines and Headaches

The oil can be applied gently around the forehead and ears, and gently massaged into the scalp (around ten drops) to help alleviate headaches and migraines. As a tonic to prevent migraines it can also be taken daily in small doses.

Anti-Ageing and Improved Complexion

Kalonji oil can be mixed with apple cider vinegar, honey and olive oil, and applied briefly to the face as a mask prior to going to bed (rinse off before sleeping) and also added to orange juice and drunk twice per day (two to three drops). This can promote youthfulness and wellbeing.

Stomach Ailments

Kalonji oil and ginger mixed together on a teaspoon and eaten can help alleviate stomach cramps, bloating and irritation. It can be given to children when mixed with cows milk and one or two drops of kalonji oil.

Dental Pain and Gum Disease

Have toothaches or gum disease? Gargling kalonji oil will help eradicate gum disease, and rubbing it on the gum near the site of pain will reduce inflammation and be useful as an analgesic.


Taken with apple cider vinegar daily, and or rubbed at the sight of pain and aching can help to relieve discomfort.

It is not recommended to use kalonji oil for prolonged periods of time, however it is best to be prescribed as a treatment by your naturopath, or taken under medical supervision. Be sure to tell your doctor or naturopathic doctor about your use of kalonji oil.

Anxiety and Trauma Treatment

Anxiety is caused from a number of different mental disorders which include:

  • Panic disorder
  • Generalised anxiety disorder
  • Phobic disorders
  • Stress disorders

Typically, anxiety is indicated by symptoms such as the experience of panic attacks. Panic attacks involve a sudden overwhelming fear, palpitations, trembling, shortness of breath, sense of choking, chest pain, chills, hot flushes, dizziness and a sense of detachment from reality. Generalised Anxiety Disorder

People diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder may experience insomnia, irritability, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension and personality changes such as becoming less social.

Anxiety is also associated with post-traumatic stress disorder. A traumatic event can include a person being exposed to an experience where they nearly lost their lives, or significant harm was caused to them, or a high risk of such was experienced (automobile accident, shooting, bashing, domestic violence). Post-traumatic stress disorder sufferers usually experience anxiety related to triggers around the event (such as people, places or events associated with the trauma) and have a general attitude of cynicism and hopelessness related to their future. They can also experience hypervigilance, insomnia and agitation.

Symptoms That Require Medical Investigation

Regardless of panic attacks having similar symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, fainting and weakness should not be merely attributed to anxiety, but instead should be thoroughly investigated.

Treatment for Anxiety

Many patients receive counselling and talk therapy, related to handling the triggers for their anxiety, and receive patient education as to how to manage their levels of stress. A counsellor or psychologist can assist an anxiety sufferer to come to terms with circumstances that may provoke anxiety, and work with the person in order to formulate a treatment plan.
